Working with Matt and the Freelance Squad has been a game-changer for us. The turnaround is always fast, and they have an impressive understanding of our brand, which means we’re not constantly going back and forth.

Brief:

Showing why Spare’s live traffic routing is a game changer

The video will need to highlight how Spares Google Live Traffic-powered routing works. Show what goes wrong when data isn’t available, and reinforce that Spare is leading the way with true, working technology.

Solution:

For this video, Spare had strong brand guidelines and assets to build from. And to get the ball rolling, they would be providing a script, which would be adjusted for video by Shannon at the Freelance Squad.

Apart from initial consultation on the script, my role started by translating their script into a storyboard (see screenshot below). I studied their brand guidelines and their website to see how I can make use of what had come before and push things to make the messaging work as hard as it can.

I was using Boords to share the storyboard I was developing which allows the client to easily comment and provide feedback on individual frames.

The video starts in their brand purple colour, with engaging animations to relate the viewer to the issue that Spare are solving. When the brand is introduced on frame 7 of the storyboard, the colours lighten up to reinforce positivity and trust in the solution with Spare. From then on, the focus of the content is framed inside a Tablet to indicate and focuses on the product benefits without overwhelming with information – also supported by showing a stripped-back and minimalist UI design of their app, so the viewer only sees what matters.

For the brand assets, I was given access to a Figma board which had their branding colours, logos as well as UI graphics from the App that I could easily pull from. This saved a lot of time and meant that I could quickly produce storyboards that represented the final look for them to see.

This video came together relatively quickly over a few weeks. The majority of communication took place over the Freelance Squads Slack channel.  But by using Boords, the client was able to track versions and comment on the storyboard directly. Likewise, I used frame.io for the client to feedback on the video drafts.

Since completion, the video sits on their YouTube channel, embedded on their website and has been used at events to successfully promote their new routing system by Google.

This project came from working with The Freelance Squad – A talented collective of expert copywriters, SEO experts, designers, and more.

Shannon and her team brought me in to work with the client directly and had these awfully kind words to say about the experience:

Testimonial

“At the Freelance Squad, we have an exceptionally high bar for the freelancers we work with; they gotta be efficient, talented, and above all, a pure joy to work with. Matt easily checks those three boxes, and we’re so thrilled to have him as one of our Squad Members. Working with a start-up client that’s entering a new space can be tricky, as there isn’t always a lot to compare to, timelines and budgets are tight, and we’re eager to prove ourselves. Matt’s commitment to delivering outstanding quality videos and working directly with the client made it all feel like a breeze.

The end result was a series of fun and upbeat videos created in record time that were on budget and wowed the client. Excited to work with Matt again soon!”
